With Summer here in full swing, the one thing on everyones mind is how to keep cool – we’re expecting temperatures in the high 40’s so it really is a legitimate point of conversation..

Beat the heat – Naturally – with these foods that help you keep your cool in the sweltering summer. Nature has been designed with an intricate balance, seasonal fruits all serve a purpose and the ones that show up in the summer are naturally equipped to provide you with hydration, vitamins and minerals that are essential to keeping you healthy and cool during the hot summer months.

Cucumber: Toss it into a bowl of kachumbar salad, create a refreshing raita out of it, or even just have it raw with hummus or our personal favourite, with some salt and lemon – cucumber is refreshing, light on digestion and great for the skin. It replenishes your body with a fresh burst of energy and essential nutrients.

 Melons

Summer is incomplete without seeing the sight of melons on fruit carts, and on our tables. Heavy on water content, watermelon is the perfect summer snack. It also has a higher concentration of lycopene (a powerful antioxidant) than most other fresh fruits or vegetables. You can also quench your thirst and keep from overheating with honeydew, cantaloupe, and other juicy melons. We LOVE freezing a slice of watermelon and having it almost like an ice pop!

Protip:  it’s best to eat melons alone on an empty stomach, we recommend forty-five minutes before other meals!

Coconut

This versatile fruit gives you coconut water, oil, and the fruit all in one. They are naturally filled with hydration and electrolytes to keep you cool and hydrated. We believe that if we get stranded on a deserted island, as long as there are some coconut trees nearby, we’ll survive long enough to be rescued – the water keeping us hydrated and the flesh providing nutrition.

Protip: Drink a glass of coconut water a day keeps the headaches away!

Yogurt

You can’t go wrong with yogurt in the summer. Yogurt is healthy, filling, high in probiotic gut beneficial bacteria and will certainly help cool you down. Make a breakfast parfait with berries and granola, have it for lunch with rice or roti, or even blend with fruit and freeze it to make a popsicle or froyo! Who doesn’t love froyo! – there’s no shortage of ways to get some yogurt into your summer diet!
