Personal Style 101

In the age of Instagram style bloggers, and pinterest worthy looks, it becomes hard to filter out exactly what your own look is. A lot of times, one can like an outfit. But it might not necessarily be ‘them’ as a person.. so how does one go about the difficult task of finding their own particular look, that personal style?

Clean house first

First and foremost – and this one is hard, take a long look at your closet and start cleaning up. Take out all the clothes that you haven’t worn in over a year, that are just taking up space and make a ‘donate’ pile. Start fresh, so that you can start building your dream wardrobe.

A strong base of “Basic” and “Investment” pieces

These pieces should be the strong foundation of your wardrobe, and should be fool-proof. After your clean-up, you’ll have a better idea of the holes in your wardrobe and what pieces you need so when you do go shopping, keep those in mind. It’s okay to spend a bit extra on these, as they are your staples – think the RIGHT fitting pair of jeans, that perfect white shirt, a pair of white pants or a shalwar that instantly makes every outfit look finished. Once your base of these is strong, it’s a lot easier to get more adventurous with the rest of your look.

Shop Smart

Keep your eyes out for sales, discount codes and deals. These are your best friends. Subscribe to brands that you like, so that you’re in the know when these drop!

Observe and Stalk Shamelessly

Put on your style stalker hat, and start noticing what people around you are wearing. If there’s someone in particular who’s style you admire, deconstruct their look and try to see it as individual pieces. Notice what it is about their look that you like or dislike, and then to think if you could picture yourself wearing the same thing, or perhaps if you would pair it differently. Example, you might love an ethnic kurta shalwar on someone else, but it might be a look you feel is too desi for you.. could you perhaps, still wear the kurta and pair it with straighter, more structured pants to give it that slightly modern edge?

Visualize and categorize

Nobody likes being put in a box, or having labels attached to them.. however, when it comes to your styling choices, it certainly does help to categorize. Style is very visual, as well as personal, as are our choices of what we are drawn towards.. Start by creating mood boards or visual boards of the kinds of looks you like (both Instagram and pinterest are great for this).. then start noticing what is in common in the looks you like – do you lean towards more feminine, or edgy? Is it a vintage vibe you’re going for, or are you look for ultra modern pieces.. free and bohemian, or more structured? From there, get clear on the vibe you want, when it’s your own personal style.

Copycat

Ain’t no shame in the inspiration game! Everyone’s personal look/style was inspired by someone else. Have a look in your own wardrobe, for pieces similar to the ‘looks’ you’ve liked and see how close you can come to it.. Something old, something new, something borrowed – you get the gist. Try it out, and see how you feel.

Accessorize

Turn up the volume on more basic looks with some statement accessories. Think jhumka’s with a white shirt and jeans combo, stacked rings or bracelets to give a more edgy vibe, or capes thrown on to add some color and dimension to a monotone look. Where accessories go, the world is your oyster.

Confidence is the best look on you

Fashion is different from style.. Don’t blindly follow trends, just because celebrities are wearing them. Fashions and trends will come and go, but your style should be a curation of your personal taste. Don’t feel pressured to follow trends, wear clothes that make you feel happy, confident and represent who YOU are – we promise, it’s the absolute best look on you.
